Good morning lovelies,
We had a long weekend this past one for ANZAC day, a day to reflect, honour and give thanks to our service men and women.
So much to be thankful to them for and so lucky to live in this wonderful and very proud country.
Long weekends will usually see a cyber crop happening somewhere and I was lucky enough to participate in one this weekend, although I only got two challenges done due to having a photo shoot and a BBQ with friends on the Saturday night.
This first page I did was for a 5,4,3,2,1 challenge.
5 large embellishments
4 patterned papers
3 mists or inks
2 word title 1 photo
Here is my entry:
There is lots of dimension in this layout without it being too bulky simply by building up the background with stencils, mists, gesso, machine stitching and washi tapes.
It's amazing that just by using these products how unique and dimensional your page will turn out.
The second challenge I entered was a colour challenge. The colour combo was orange, yellow, black and white.
On first impressions the combo reminded me of a sunny summer day but then I came across this photo of my husband that i just love and decided to go with that.
I used a darker, more burnt orange than a brighter tone.
Lots of machine stitching on this one as well...which I'm loving again at the moment.
Why not break out your sewing machine and try adding texture and dimension to your next project with some machine stitching?
You'll be surprised at just how cool it looks!

Holding my own Easter Retreat
Hi everyone,
Hope you're having a relaxing Easter break wherever you are in the world.
This year we stayed home for the Easter holidays and it's been pretty quiet so far so I declared an impromptu Easter Retreat @ home, just with me LOL
Our kids are all coming over tomorrow for lunch and I'm pretty much all organised for that so what better way to spend the days than scrapping?
So far I've completed 2 pages in between what housework I have (and there's always lots to do here!!) and cooking meals for those of us at home.
I finished this page first...this is a 'just for me' layout:
I just love clusters and tiny details...I really think they add the finishing touches on a layout.
Hope you're having a relaxing Easter break wherever you are in the world.

I finished this page first...this is a 'just for me' layout:
I found the photo of my little grandson and his mummy walking along the beach in the ridiculous amount of photos I have of him when I was off on Retreat a few weeks back. I absolutely LOVE it and couldn't wait to scrap it.
I think I must be one of the biggest procrastinators when it comes to starting a page so I set myself a challenge on this one to just 'stick it down' without worrying about it too much and I'm really, really happy with it.
I've used a stencil, texture paste, Gelatos and Glimmer Mist to create the background and lots of lovely layering with clusters of embellishments to finish the design.
Here's a close up of the layering and embellishments:
That tiny little anchor you see there? I must have had that in my stash for about 6-7 years. Originally it was a sweet little gold metal charm but to make it suit my page I painted it with Gesso and then coloured it with Gelatos.
This next page I did for the April Scrap the Boys challenge which is to use flowers on a boys layout.
To be honest I struggle with doing this, especially as my boys are all grown up but by using chipboard flowers layered with felt ones I got it to work perfectly:
I love this photo of my husband and little grandson who was helping our son move house on this day. Little man was so tired at this stage and was quite happy to sit in the cart moving plant pots with his grandpa. Look at his little elbow resting on the back of the cart...sooo cute.
It's been a while since I used lots of patterned paper on a page but love this Jillibean Soup kit and these papers suited the photo perfectly. Lots of distressing and layering went on here finished off with the cute stickers in the kit:
That's it so far but I'm about to print off a sketch and play along over at Once upon a...Sketch for the very first time. I'm loving these challenge blogs lately, they are the perfect way to get that mojo flowing.
What challenge sites will you be visiting over the break?
Have a wonderful day tomorrow and I hope the Easter bunny brings you lots of yummy eggs.
Bye for now,
Sharryn xx

Playing with mixed media
Hey all,
Hope you are all well and got some creative time for yourself over the past weekend.
When I was on Retreat recently I mentioned to a friend that I had a heap of photos from our stay in outback NSW that I wanted to put together in some sort of album but I wasn't keen on the old style mini album as there are just too many photos I wanted to include. So she suggested I do Smash album. I'd heard of the Smash concept but never really delved into it as I really struggle now with time for scrapping and my Project Life albums are way beyond behind!
Luckily for me a friend of mine owns a shop not too far away and even luckier another friend was doing a Smash class on Saturday. So I took myself down to the store to find out a little bit more about Smash albums. I'm so glad I did because it has opened a whole new world of possibilities to me and I can see Smashing in this house is going to become quite popular!
I love that this page was already in the album I'd chose for my first project. A sign maybe?
Something else I've been playing with over the past week that I've been wanting to do for a while but again...never enough time. I had a few nights where I just couldn't sleep (that creative mind never stops!!) so instead of fighting it I went with the flow and created these little mixed media canvases using a few different techniques on each one.
This first one I made for my scrapping room:
To start the background off I used some stencils to add some texture and dimension to random areas of the canvas. I used two different stencils for this.
I then coloured the background with Gelatos blending them in as I went as these colours are already on a canvas and some bunting in my scrap room.
I wanted to play a little bit with Gelatos and chipboard so I painted the hour glass (top right hand corner) with gesso, then when it was dry I randomly added texture paste. Once that was dry I added the same colour Gelatos that I'd used on the background of the canvas and blended them in just with my fingers. I love the definition and dimension it has given the chipboard piece.
I used other chipboard pieces but left them white so as not to take the focus off the background or the featured hour glass piece then embellished the canvas with flowers and sweet little resin birds.
I found the colours of the flowers and birds a little too bright for what I wanted so I simply toned them down by dry brushing over them with gesso.
This second piece I made was a technique I hadn't tried yet but I LOVE the way it's turned out. I'll definitely be playing around with this technique more often:
Again I started on a plain mini canvas. This time I've used strips of white cardstock to build the foundation.
Having an idea in mind of a beach scene I stamped once piece of white cardstock in an orange ink and another in a turquoise ink, both with different background stamps.
Once they were dry I cut random strips from them and adhered them to the canvas.
For just a little more added visual interest I added some washi tape randomly around the canvas in colours that would compliment the picture once it was finished.
Then, to tone the whole thing down, I went over it with gesso and a dry brush leaving some areas untouched and some completely covered in gesso.
Once the gesso was dry I brought out my Gelatos again and started playing around with colours on the gesso'd cardstock strips. Starting with lighter colours then building up to darker colours and blending as I went gave the cardstock strips much more definition and dimension.
When I was happy with the look I cut out a sun and some cute little surfboards from the pre stamped cardstock I made in the beginning and adhered them to the canvas giving them the same treatment with gesso and Gelatos then I simply covered the whole canvas in a nice coat of Mod Podge. Too easy and I really love this effect!
This one I've had in mind for a while as a gift for a friend so all I had to do was pretty much get it out from my mind on to the mini canvas!
I have a friend who loves owls and the colour purple. So I've had this Steampunk owl earmarked for a project for her for quite some time.
I also had an idea of what I wanted to do.
To start off with, I adhered crunpled tissue paper to the entire canvas with Mod podge. once it was dry I simply adhered the chipboard owl and the chipboard numbers I've had in my stash for ages (a great way to use up old stash!!) straight on to the canvas and gave the whole piece a couple of coats of gesso.
I let this dry and got to work with Distress Inks and again Gelatos using sponges and my fingers blending the colurs as I went to achieve the distressed look I was after.
I added metal brads and again from my stash some round metal clips I've had for years I used as the owls eyes. For an extra layer of dimension I added some more chipboard cogs to some of the numbers. I embossed these with Distress embossing powders and again added metal brads to them.
To finish the piece off I coated the whole thing with Mod Podge.
So I now have a Steampunk piece for my friend. I hope she likes it!
I've had a ball playing around with different mixed media techniques. Not being one to Art journal I've found by using mini canvases I can try different techniques and end up with a piece I can either keep or gift to a friend.
It's a win-win thing all 'round.
Why not grab some mini canvases before the Easter holidays and give something different a try?
Who knows...you might even end up with finished Xmas gifts for family and friends.
Have a wonderful, safe and happy Easter everyone.
Chat again soon,
Sharryn

Scrapping winner!
Hey everyone :)
Hope this post finds you well and DRY...as it's still raining here!!
We did need it but I wish it would fall where it's needed the most and give some much needed relief to our drought stricken farmers who are doing it really tough at the moment.
Last post I shared this layout I'd created for the March Scrap The Boys challenge and I'm excited to say I won a prize! YAY...LOL
I must admit the Scrap The Boys challenge site has a special place in my heart. Did you know I started that site many moons ago?
It started out as a place just to share layouts of BOYS for inspiration to other scrappers but sadly I couldn't keep it going after returning to work. I handed it over to the very talented Susan Longman who turned it into a challenge site and the rest, as they say, is history. Right now, Susan's sister Wendy is looking after it. Just a little bit of trivia I thought you might be interested in LOL
I also mentioned last post that I was heading off on a Retreat that weekend. The Retreat was organised by Lisa Warren of Inspired Blueprints and was held at The Tops Conference Centre in Stanwell Tops. I've never been to a retreat there but I can tell you it certainly won't be the last!
Such a beautiful place, the staff were great and the food was amazing...all the little things that make up a great weekend away for scrapping with the girls.
As for the girls...I had an absolute blast with not only my retreat partner in crime, Chrissy, but a few others as well. I think I'm to blame yet again for a very late night...or should I say early morning on the Saturday. 5.00 a.m bedtime. Oops ;P
Lisa had arranged a few challenges to be done over the weekend so I entered them to keep the mojo flowing. I ended up getting 4 done (I know right? I need to stop chatting and start scrapping on Retreat!). 2 of those pages I don't consider finished properly yet so I'll get on to them before I share.
This one I did for a challenge at Scrapbook Savvy (owned by the lovely Sar Ward) who was having her own Cyber Crop on the same weekend.
I misread this colour challenge and thought it was pink and blue. Thought I had it in the bag when I re-read...also GREEN! Arrgghhh...this threw me back HOURS as I just couldn't see where or how I was going to put some green. Really, really LOVE how this turned out though.
I did a beach photo shoot back in February of a friends' gorgeous daughters who are dancers and I've been busting to scrap the photos. One down...about a million to go...hehe.
The second page I actually finished wasn't part of a challenge but I bought a couple of new stencils at Retreat and wanted to have a play with them.
They were both really cool, grungy stencils (and let me tell you BOTH got a massive workout over the weekend from everyone).
One was just perfect for this photo of my son and his trainers at his last Muay Thai fight:
Such a cool, grungy boys page.
Right now I'm working on a mini canvas to put in my scrap room. I'm loving texture paste with stencils and Gelatos with gesso at the moment and the way they all seem to blend together.
Beautiful mixed media.
Well I'm off to cook dinner and hopefully have a little play at the scrap desk tonight.

Retreating this weekend!
Hi everyone,
Hope you have all been well in your part of this big, wide world!
Can you believe it's almost April already? How time flies.
Have you been or done anything exciting lately? I went on my very first Ghost Tour with some friends recently and wow...it was amazing! Even the extremely skeptical in the group must have been awestruck at some of the experiences we had. The tour was in a beautiful old house with servants quarters and breathtaking gardens, although you couldn't really see them in the dark. I'll definitely be doing another tour in the near future!
I've been busy in my little craft room making things for my market stall in between photo shoots and daily life so it's been pretty hectic as usual around here.
I just have to share this ballet point shoe I made for market but I love it that much I'm contemplating keeping it for me. I think it would look gorgeous in my craft room :)
I'm off on a scrapbooking Retreat this weekend with my retreat partner in crime, Chrissy, and let me tell you...this break couldn't have come at a better time!
It's a Retreat neither of us have been too before and I'm looking really forward to the views I've been told this place has to offer. We are off to Stanwell Tops Conference Centre this time.
Just to get my mojo flowing before Retreat I pulled out my new Faber Castell Gelatos that I've had sitting around for the best part of 8 weeks before I even touched them. I just had to have them before Retreat!
So I got out some cardstock, Gesso and the Gelatos and OMG...I am IN LOVE!!
Gesso and Gelatos are my new best friend! Love the effect it has!
Here's a layout I finished using both on the weekend. I'm entering it in this month's Scrap the Boys Challenge:
LOVE that no matter what...each and every background you create will be unique!
I've also had an unfinished layout sitting here since LAST YEAR! Can you believe that?? I just never got around to finishing it so I got stuck into that and now it's off my desk and in a folder. Here it is:
Really love the colours in Merry Go Round...so soft and pretty.
Well that's it from me for now. I'm off to help my son do something with his car *groan* then start packing for this weekends Retreat.
Chat soon and take care,
Sharryn xx
